History of Hoover

North Canton is where the vacuum was invented in 1907 by James Murray Spangler, inventor who was moonlighting as a janitor. Spangler had asthma, so he invented an “electric suction sweeper” that sucked the dust away when he swept. He sold his patent to William Henry “Boss” Hoover, who founded the “Electric Suction Sweeper Company,” which later became the Hoover Suction Sweeper Company.

A Bit of History

In 1831, the Village of New Berlin was first established. William H. “Boss” Hoover became the town’s first mayor in 1906. In 1918, because of anti-German sentiment from World War I, New Berlin changed its name officially to North Canton. North Canton officially became a city on January 1, 1962.

  • Marty Lee Hoenes – rock musician; lead guitarist for Donnie Iris and the Cruisers; freelance artist who designed many of the band’s album covers
  • Eddie McClintock – actor known for his role of Secret Service agent Pete Lattimer on the Syfy series Warehouse 13; and roles on Desperate Housewives, Bones, Sex and the City, Friends, Monk, The King of Queens, and many more
  • Jeffrey Mylett – actor and songwriter best known for performing in both the stage and film versions of Godspell, plus roles in films Money Talks, Brewster’s Millions, and My Man Adam.
